Addictions
The first step is making the call to arrange an initial consultation to talk through the different options that are available to you, this can be an anxiety provoking call to make and you may think about it for a long time before actually making the call. The initial consultation will look at your situation and the nature and severity of the addiction and also the implications to other aspects within your life whether that is to your health, job or family and loved ones. Then we will look at options that are available and attempt to make a plan for moving forward.
Different forms of addictions
Addictions can take many different forms and can include:
-
Alcohol
-
Illegal drugs
-
Prescription medication
-
Gambling
-
Sex
-
Internet
-
Gaming
-
Shopping
Treatment options
Many people will find weekly counselling sessions with a counsellor with experience with addictions extremley beenficial to helping them overcome their addiction. It is usual to agree to work together for six sessions and review the progress at the end to look at the next steps which can be to continue with counselling, to stop at sessions six or to refer onto another professional. For those whose addictions may require more intervention that counselling can provide on its own I may recommend a refferal to either a Consultant Psychiatrist who specialises in addictions and / or a referral to a rehabilitation centre. I may also recommend the same treatment for those who require to be medically detoxed in a safe environment.
My experience
I have worked within mental health and addictions since 2005 at the Priory and the Cardinal Clinic and have helped to treat a large number of people with different forms of addictions. I understand it is difficult to make the first step and I am more than happy to talk in confidence to you about the situation you or a loved one are facing before making an appointment. If you would like to speak to me, please call 01189 680 900.

For those who are suffering from any form of addiction, you will know the impact this can have upon many different aspects of your life including relationships, family environment and careers. Asking for help from an addiction can be one of the most difficult decisions to make. There may be times when you feel you may want to be free of the addiction and other times when you feel it is your only way of coping. Counselling can play an important part in overcoming any form of addiction. The abilitiy to talk about the situation in a safe environment where you are free to say exactly how you feel can be extremley beneficial in deciding that breaking the hold that the addiction has over you is what you want to do.
